Roger Hilton (1911-1975): Untitled (CC2/53) offered in our One Day 20th Century and Contemporary Sale starting on 11th June 2019 at our salerooms in Exeter, Devon.
The 20th Century and Contemporary Sale on 11th June 2019 brings a fresh and exciting vibe to the salerooms with over 350 lots of modern pictures, ceramics and works of art across all disciplines.
The 2018 sale in this category produced a spectacular World Record for a 1970s Hans Coper stoneware Cycladic Vase (SS04/129) that was knocked-down for an inclusive price of £305,000 highlighting the demand and excitement in this period of the art market.
This time round the picture section in the sale includes work by major British names like the mixed media landscape by John Piper (CC02/360) titled Garn Fechan that has an estimate of £5,000-£7,000. There is a 1968 David Hockney etching titled Cushions (CC02/213), estimated at £2,500-£3,500 and a Patrick Heron January 1973 screenprint (CC02/4), estimated at £1,200-£1,800. The Untitled Roger Hilton (CC02/53) gouache is estimated at £2,000-£3,000 and, across a large range of more modestly estimated pictures, the 1970 Alan Davie Fox Watch lithograph (CC02/1) is £300-£500 and a Graham Sutherland etching of Bees (CC02/49) is £250-£350. Perhaps the most dramatic painting is the heavy impasto oil self-portrait by Billy Childish (CC02/186) with an estimate of £6,000-£8,000.
The studio pottery section includes a fresh to the market collection of pots by Val Barry (1937-2018) who established a workshop studio in Crouch End in the 1960s. Barry worked alongside Bernard, Janet and David Leach, Michael Cardew and John Maltby amongst others in the 1970s. This collection consists of 40 lots with estimates from £100 upwards. Alongside the Barry Collection are works by major international potters like the three Shoji Hamada lots in the sale, two of which are bottle vases (CC02/240 and CC02/246) and the other a collection of dishes (CC02/241), with estimates ranging from £1,000-£3,000. Lot 247 is a Lucie Rie squeezed stoneware bowl (CC02/247), estimated at £1,000-£2,000 and lot 245 is a circular form stoneware bowl (CC02/245) by John Ward, estimated at £2,000-£2,500.
Among the 20th Century sculpture, three Jean Mahie Figural-Form bronzes stand-out in an Abstract way (CC02/113, CC02/114 and CC02/115). These each have an estimate of £300-£500 and a& more familiar and recognisable bronze bust of John Lennon by Kenneth Carter is estimated at £1,000-£1,500. There are five lots of George Jensen silver including a vase, cutlery and a 1973 Moonlight Grapes bracelet estimate at £250-£350 (CC02/87).
The sale rounds-off with 20th Century, vintage and designer furniture including designs by Eames (CC02/366), Neils Moller (CC02/368), Vernor Pantor (CC02/362) and various other Scandinavian and Danish workshops.
