Antiquarian Book Auction Preview
Rachel Littlewood previews the Antiquarian Book Auction, which has two very special
copies of much loved children's book classics as well as a large collection of fashion
books. The sale is being held online and in Exeter on Wednesday, 12th September
2018.
MILNE, AA - The House At Pooh Corner (BK20/129) offered in our Books, Maps and Prints
Auction starting on 12th September 2018 at our salerooms in Exeter, Devon.
The forthcoming Antiquarian Book Auction on 12th September 2018
includes amongst many other things, two very special copies of much loved children's
book classics.
The first is the Wind and the Willows (BK20/122),
a limited first edition of 200 numbered copies, signed by the illustrator Ernest
Shepard and the author Kenneth Grahame. Dated 1931 and published by Methuen, this
classic is inviting bids of £2,000-£3,500.
The second volume which everyone will know and remember is The House at Pooh Corner
(BK20/129), a limited edition of 350 numbered copies, signed by the illustrator
Ernest Shepard and author AA Milne. This sensational copy, published in 1928, is
still in its original dustwrapper and is expected to fetch £2,500-£3,500.
Also within the children's and illustrated books
section of the sale are several beautiful volumes illustrated by
Arthur Rackham, including Grimm's Fairy Tales
(BK20/147) with 40 colour plates. Re-bound in full crimson gilt morocco signed Bayntun,
the pre-sale estimate is £300-£500, whilst a copy of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens
(BK20/148) with 50 tipped-in plates is inviting bids of £300-£500.
And last but not least is the Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling (BK20/128),
illustrated and re-bound in full blue gilt morocco and signed by Sotheran,
with slipcase, these first editions are inviting bids of £300-£500.
It is not often that a whole collection of books on a specific subject come up for
auction, but Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood are delighted to be offering a super
collection of fashion books and plates, the property of the Late Richard Davin Barber.
Many of the volumes are crammed full of amazingly vibrant hand coloured fashion
plates. Highlights of the collection include four volumes of the Journal Des Dames Des Demoiselles
(BK20/65) with 76 hand coloured plates and an estimate of £150-£250 and six volumes
of La Mode Illustree (BK20/71) with 83 hand coloured plates with an estimate of
£250-£500. There are over 75 lots on offer in this wonderful collection.
In the Military and Naval Books section of the auction,
there is a set of Winston S Churchill's History of the English Speaking People
(BK20/225) in four volumes. It is the Chartwell edition, which is signed by Winston
Churchill presented to Mrs Arnison (a friend of Lady Churchill). The pre-sale estimate
is £2,500-£3,500.
Another highlight of the sale is the run of thirty five volumes of The Repertory of Arts & Manufactures (BK20/23)
consisting of original communications, specifications of patent inventions. This
rare continuous run which illustrates all manner of inventions, giving a unique
insight into the inventive process which fuelled the Industrial Revolution during
the 18th and early 19th Century. It is being offered with an estimate of £2,000-£3,000.
In total, there are just under 400 lots on offer in this forthcoming book auction.
