Professor Brian Cox may have his own hypothesis on time travel, but as an auctioneer
I can tell you that there is nothing like the forthcoming Sporting & Collectors Auction
to transport you instantly back to any moment in time.
The original issue 1977 Star Wars Luke Skywalker action figure is expected to attract
a lot of attention.
Seeing an original boxed toy in pristine condition instantly brings nostalgic childhood
memories of longing for the latest thing. If there is one lot that typifies this
and is probably a factor in starting the whole modern generation of franchising
and marketing then the original issue 1977 Star Wars Luke Skywalker action figure
(£300-£500) is a perfect example. In 1977, the demand for Star Wars toys outstripped
the production so even now, 40 years later, figures in their original packaging
command high prices at auction.
A signed Doors album cover features in the Sporting & Collectors Sale to be
held in Exeter in May 2017.
Music is another example of something that is able to evoke strong recollections
and this is also reflected at auction with values for rock and pop memorabilia.
Included in the sale is a collection of signed album covers from artist such
as David Bowie (£150-£200), Prince (£80-£120), Queen (£50-£70), The Doors (£200-£300)
and others.
Nostalgia is an addictive emotion and one that fuels many collectors passions, hence
the wide range of lots included in the sale. Railway enthusiasts will be eager
to obtain a station sign from the Golden age of Steam, like the L&NWR totem
for Wigan station (£300-£400) or even the Southern Railways 'Platform 6' sign (£100-£200).
If smaller railways are more your thing then the 3½ inch gauge live steam 4-4-0
engine (£1,200-£1,500) can either stand proudly amongst your collection or pull
you around the garden!
The Edwardian Scottish FA Medal awarded to Alex Bennett in 1908 is a highlight of
the sale.
The reverse of the medal awarded to Alex Bennett, who was the first footballer to
play for both Celtic and Rangers.
As a sporting nation, there will no doubt be a great deal of interest in the Edwardian
9ct gold and enamel Scottish FA medal awarded to Alex Bennett in 1908 (£1,500-£2,000).
Considering that many Premier League and Scottish Premier teams had only been established
for a few decades and Alex Bennet was the first player to play for both rivals Celtic
and then Rangers, bidding could be as tense as a penalty shootout.
Once again the sale has been extend to a two days to encompass the good selection
of militaria,
antique textiles and clothing,
stamps
and musical instruments.
Please note that all lots are subject to buyers premium of 21% +VAT @20%.
