Sporting and Collectors' Sale: Lions, Tigers and Bears!
Brian Goodison-Blanks previews the September 2014 Sporting and Collectors Sale that
is being held in our Exeter salerooms on 3rd/4th September 2014 with live online
bidding for those that cannot be at the auction in person. The sale has an even
greater number of eclectic and unusual items on offer than usual, with considerable
international interest already being shown, stiff competititon is expected over
the two day auction.
An Early 20th Century Steiff Blonde Plush Bear 'Big Ted' (SC19/858) is being offered
in the Sporting and Collectors Sale on 3rd/4th September 2014 with a pre-sale estimate
of £1,000-£1,500.
Once again the
Sporting & Collectors Auction
at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood is upon us with an even greater number of eclectic
and unusual items over the 3rd/4th September 2014.
Taxidermy
may seem macabre to many, but there are still collectors of
Tiger skins
(SC19/60) and cased birds today. At the other end of the spectrum are the
doll and
teddy collectors
who are just as fanatical as the rest of us when it comes to our collecting passions.
Certainly the
large blonde plush Steiff bear
(SC19/858) and the
push along growling Polar Bear
(SC19/852) could warm the heart of anyone dismissive of the sale.
The auction includes a Panurge Pale Plush 'Push Along' Bear (SC19/852), which is
inviting modest bids of £50-£70. The sale in Exeter will have live online bidding
support from our partners The Saleroom and Invaluable.
Collecting is a passion that drives many people to the sale, often helped by nostalgia
for childhood toys or a deep interest in a historical subject or period. From the
Beatles autographs
(SC19/1286) to the
(SC19/780A), and from the boxed trains to the early fountain pens, the sale illustrates
that we all have treasures hidden away in drawers and cupboards that we may think
nothing of, but many, many other people do!
The two day sale presents the opportunity to acquire an Autograph Album Signed John
Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr (SC19/1286).
Amongst the diverse lots on offer is a collection of early cricket and football
postcards (SC19/780a), which is inviting bids of £300-£500.
One of the growing areas of collecting is
medals and militaria
A fact that is reflected by the size of these sections within the sale. Imagine
being the recipient of a
Waterloo Medal
(SC19/427) and having participated in perhaps one of the most significant battles
of the 19th century. To a collector, this medal and many others that are in the
sale are poignant reminders of history.
The 1815 Waterloo Medal awarded to Charles Quinn 1st Batt 40th Rgt Foot (SC19/427),
which carries a pre-sale estimate of £1,000-£1,200.
The two day sale has already attracted a great deal of international interest via
the Internet and strong competition is expected on the day from buyers who will
travel to the sale on the day.
