Preview of March 2013 Sporting and Collectors Auction
Brian Goodison-Blanks previews the upcoming Sporting and Collectors Sale, which
will be held in our Honiton salerooms on 20th March 2013. The auction offers a good
collection of antique firearms as well as Olympic Memorabilia and a wide and eclectic
selection of other sporting and collectors lots.
Westcountry Auctioneers
Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood are offering this Deane Adams & Deane hammerless
revolver (SC16/86) in their March 2013 Sporting and Collectors Sale, which will
also have Internet Live Bidding support.
Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood, as the
largest firm of auctioneers in the Westcountry, has been able to bring
together a good selection of
Antique Firearms, which will attract the attention of the specialist
firearms and gun collector.
Some of the antique firearm highlights in this Sporting and Collectors sale include
three revolvers that are significant in the development of the modern day gun. The
Coopers' patent pepperbox revolver
(SC16/91), the
Remington New Model Army 1858 revolver
(SC16/90) and the
Deane Adams & Deane hammerless revolver
(SC16/86) are from a single-owner collection that has been consigned to the sale.
Each example is in very desirable original condition and being fresh to the market
will, no doubt, attract a great deal of attention both in the saleroom and through
our online bidding facilities.
One of the highlights of the Antique Firearms section of the Sporting and Collectors
Auction is a Remington New Model Army 1858 six-shot percussion revolver (SC16/90).
Another Antique Firearm highlight in the Sporting sale is a 19th Century
six-shot Cooper's patent, ring-trigger under hammer, percussion boxlock revolver
(SC16/91).
One of my personal favourites in this sporting sale is a
small ivory carved dog's
head whistle
(SC16/55). Only 4cm long and inset with glass eyes, it is a wonderfully simple piece
with great appeal to collectors and dog lovers alike. As the Sporting and Collectors
sale is also being held live online, this small piece will no doubt attract international
interest with its £100-£150 estimate.
A late 19th Century carved ivory dog's head whistle (SC16/55) is expected to attract
international interest as the Sporting and Collectors Sale is being held live online.
The feats of the athletes of the London 2012 Olympics were certainly an inspiration
to many and the market for
Olympic Memorabilia
remains strong. The
1908 London Olympic silver medal
(SC16/216) won by Sydney Charles Evans, estimated at between £3,000 and
£5,000, reminds us that even in the early days of the modern Olympiad, the passion
and dedication to training by competitors equalled that of today's athletes.
The 1908 London Olympic Silver Medal won by Sydney Charles Evans (Sid Evans) for
Heavy Weight Boxing, estimated at between £3,000 and £5,000, is being offered in
the sporting auction being held online and at Honiton in Devon in March 2013.
The specialist
Sporting Pictures
section of the auction offers a good selection of
oils
and
watercolours
for the enthusiast collector of
equestrian and hunting
scenes.
Perhaps one of the most consistently popular artists in this field is Charles Johnson
Payne (Snaffles) (1884-1967). Included are a signed Snaffles print of the Grand National
(SC16/282a) and two original works of 'The Cherubims', 11th Hussars (Prince
Albert's Own), estimate £500-£700 each, depicting two views of a Hussar on horse
back (SC16/288)
and (SC16/289).
The Sporting and Collectors Sale also includes a print and a couple of original
works by Charles Johnson Payne (Snaffles) (1884-1967), including a signed print
of the Grand National Canal Turn. (SC16/282a).
An original work by Charles Johnson Payne (Snaffles) (1884-1967) depicting a Hussar
on horseback, estimated at £500-£700. (SC16/288).
A further original work by Charles Johnson Payne (Snaffles) (1884-1967) of a Hussar
on horseback, also estimated at £500-£700. (SC16/289).
Always an interesting sale to catalogue and conduct from the rostrum, this collectors
auction includes a number of
antique dolls,
a
late Victorian puppet theatre
(SC16/710) as well as a collection of
mid 20th century underground comics
(SC16/782). Many will be familiar with Robert Crumb's artwork from the album covers
of Janis Joplin and the Big Brother Holding Company. However,
Crumb is known to a wider group of collectors for his work on several characters
including Fritz the Cat and Mr Natural. An acquired taste for
some perhaps, but no less valuable to collectors who will be eager to obtain original
copies of these issues.
Robert Crumb's artwork is widely known. There are a group of nine mid 20th century
underground comics being offering in our 20th March 2013 Sporting and Collectors
Sale, which is being held in our Honiton salerooms in Devon and online with live
bidding support.
