Auctioneer's Preview of Fine Picture Section of January 2013 Fine Sale
A number of fine art paintings in the three day fine day sale at the end of January
2013 have already generated considerable interest from buyers who have viewed the
catalogue online.
A 19th century English School Portrait of a young lady, estimated at between £250
and £350, which is attracting a lot of pre-sale attention. (FS17/363).
The catalogue for our next
major three-day Fine Art Sale, which begins on 29th January 2013,
was posted on the Internet before Christmas, providing a great opportunity for it
to be viewed online over the holiday period.
There has been huge interest in the
Tryhorn Collection of early English
European and Oriental Porcelain. However, the picture section of the sale, which
comes-up on Wednesday, 30th January 2013, also includes several lots that
have caught the eye online.
We have had a number of enquires about
a portrait
(FS17/363), which has a modest estimate of just £250-350. The calm and gentile
pose of this young lady is no doubt much of the attraction and no doubt the obvious
interest will ensure it sells.
A reclining nude, probably by Laurie Taylor, which is being offered in the Picture
section of the forthcoming Fine Art Sale in January 2013 in Exeter, Devon. (FS17/351).
One of my favourite paintings in the sale is the
Reclining Nude
(Lot FS17/351) by a little known artist who I believe to be a Laurie Taylor.
The quality of the work is very good and for anyone inclined to own a tasteful nude,
then I think this is an excellent opportunity.
An image from Colonel Hallewood's photograph album (FS17/380), with Sir George Brown
and a portion of the Light Division Staff, a nine-man group portrait in civilian
attire.
Colonel Hallewell's photograph album
(FS17/380) is included alongside some topographical watercolours by the Colonel
and also his fascinating hand written diaries from 1857-1865. The Colonel's friendship
with the photographer Roger Fenton, which is referred to within the diaries,
is strong evidence that the views of Bolton Abbey within the album are
Fenton's own, and together with some fine topographical photographs
including Malta, Gibraltar, the Mediterranean and Crimea along with 200 cartes de
visite of British and European royalty and aristocracy, the album is a fascinating
view of Britain and Europe in the 1850s and 60s.
Lot FS17/404 is an interesting
watercolour of Greenwich, circa 1860, with a busy quayside in the
foreground and familiar buildings beyond, it is estimated at £400-£600. We also
offer a collection of drawings of Cornish and Plymouth harbours attributed
to Nicholas Matthew Condy. The drawings include views of
Looe
(FS17/407),
Polperro
(FS17/408),
Stonehouse
(FS17/409),
Eddystone
(FS17/411) and
Mount Edgcombe
(FS17/412).
The Grand Harbour, Malta (FS17/423) by Girolamo Gianni (1837-1895), which will be
auctioned in our salerooms in Exeter at the end of January 2013. Bidders unable
to attend in person will be able to bid online over the Internet during the sale.
There are Maltese views (FS17/422-423) and one of
Alexandria
(FS17/424) by Galea and Gianni and also a
strong sporting study of a cockerel, Circle of Henry Alken, estimated
at just £250-£350.
A sporting study of a cockerel from the circle of Henry Alken, estimated at between
£250 and £350 (FS17/432).
Alfred Leyman is one of the better traditional westcountry artists and there two
watercolours, both in good condition, which are views of
Gittisham
and
Cathedral Close, Exeter
(FS17/435 and FS17/436), both are estimated at £300-£500.
Mary Martin [b 1951] - The Lane From Metherell in Sun and Shade - May (FS17/465)
offered in our Three Day Fine Art Sale starting on 29th January 2013 at our salerooms
in Exeter.
Among the more contemporary pictures is a bright and cheerful group by Mary Martin
and Keith Stuart Barnes. Barnes was a member of the circle around the art critic
Roger Fry and was influenced by French Post-Impressionism (FS/464-469).
Keith Stuart Baynes [1887-1977] - The Tagus From Cacilhas (FS17/468).

Robert Lenkiewicz
