Sam (TS) Haile (1909-1948)
Giffre at Morillon, Haute Savoie. Sam (TS) Haile (1909-1948). Estimate £600-£800.
The Surrealist potter and painter Sam Haile met Marianne de Trey and they married
in 1938. Sam Haile was interested in the Surrealist work of contemporaries like
Picasso, Klee and Henry Moore.
Haile's investigation and work on the interpretation of dreams produced some extraordinary
oil paintings and watercolours but on a number of visits to the French Alps Haile
produced a series of watercolours which celebrate the scale and grandeur of the
mountains and valley landscape.
Haile and de Trey lived in New York between 1940-1943 and in 1947 the Hailes returned
to Dartington where Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst had established a centre for art
and progressive education.
The Bearnes Hampton & Littlwood sale on 18th April 2012 includes a
watercolour by Sam Haile of his exploration of the Alps titled Giffre at Morillon,
Haute Savoie with provenance to the Private Collection of Marianne de Trey.
The estimate for the watercolour is £600-£800.
