Patek Philippe & Co

Information about Swiss watchmaker Patek Philippe & Co

Patek Philippe & Co is a Swiss luxury watch manufacturer, founded in 1851, which operates from Geneva in Switzerland.

The origins of the business stretch back to 1839 when Polish watchmakers Antoni Patek and Franciszek Czapek started making pocket watches in Geneva. However, their partnership was dissolved in 1844. In 1845, Patek formed a partnership with the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe (who invented the keyless winding mechanism) with Patek Philippe & Co being established in 1851.

Patek Philippe pioneered the perpetual calendar, split seconds hand, chronograph and minute repeater in watches and is known for manufacturing it's own watch components. Their timepieces have recorded high prices at auctions worldwide. A large part of the demand for Patek Phillipe timepieces at auction is driven by the company purchasing its own watches for the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva.

Patek Philippe previously supplied watches to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The Queen's watch was worn pinned to clothing and was suspended from a diamond and enamel brooch.

A Patek Philippe wristwatch became the most expensive ever to be sold at auction on 10th May 2008 when it was purchased for 6.26 million Swiss Francs.
