Biography of the painter Margaret Dovaston (1884-1955)

Margaret Dovaston was born in Wandsworth on 3rd March 1884, the eldest child and only daughter of architect Adolphus Dovaston and his wife Amy Hay.

Dovaston studied at Ealing and South Kensington Art Schools. She latterly attended the RA Schools for five years.

Dovaston was elected a member of the RBA and Suffolk Street in 1905. She also exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy.

Margaret Dovaston developed a special interest in old English interior and historical scenes. She built up a remarkable collection of period style costume and furniture, creating her subject matter from her imagination. She said of her paintings, ‘They tell a story in which the spectator is invited to fill in the details at will’.

She never married and died in 1954 in Lambeth in Surrey.
