Biography of war artist Leslie Cole (1910-1976)
Leslie Cole (1910-1976) was a painter, teacher and notable war artist working for the Ministry of Information in Malta, the Admiralty and the War Office.
Cole was born on 11th August 1910 in Swindon in Wiltshire. He studied at Swindon College and the Royal College of Art, where he gained a diploma in mural decoration, fabric printing and lithography, before teaching at Hull College of Arts and Crafts in 1937.
The Ferens Gallery in Hull hold his work, which is reproduced widely in anthologies of pictures by war artists. Cole lived in London and in 1976 the War Museum staged an exhibition of his WWII work.
Cole died in 1976.
