Biography of Henry Redmore (1820-1887)
Henry Redmore (1820-1887), a predominantly marine artist, was born in Kingston-on-Hull in 1820. He was influenced by Hull artist William Anderson (1757-1837) and the Dutch Greats of the 17th century. Redmore probably studied for a time under John Ward (1798-1849).
Many of Redmore's works depict shipping in the Humber estuary, off the Yorkshire coast, Whitby and Scarborough. He was known to have painted in Torbay and in and around the West Country.
Redmore also visited Holland and Germany. Ferens Art Gallery in Hull hold a large permanent collection of his work.
Redmore died in 1887.
