Fine Art Auction Preview April 2022

A pair of Chinese Underglaze Blue and Copper-red Rouleau Vases (FS53/793) offered in our Three Day Fine Art Sale starting on 26th April 2022 at our salerooms in Exeter, Devon.

The Spring quarterly Fine Art Sale is upon us already and as always, we have some fabulous lots in store, with price ranges from fifty pounds per lot up to several thousand pounds.

All three days of the auction (26th, 27th & 28th April 2022) will offer live bidding on the-saleroom.com and easyliveauction.com, so if you are interested in bidding on one of these platforms, rather than bidding in the room, then do register early, because if you haven't bid with us before, there will be a few bits and pieces that will need to be sorted first.

So, what do we have on offer?

Day One starts off with the silver section, commencing at 10:00am. This is a large section in this auction, with over 400 lots on offer. Highlights include a pair of George III silver entrée dishes and covers (FS53/429) by maker William Stroud, London 1812 and bearing the Coote Family Crest. Weighing 179ozs, the pre-sale estimate is £4,000-£5,000. Also within this section is a George V silver three division circular chafing dish and liner (FS53/426). By the maker Percy Webster and dated London 1934, this super piece is inviting bids of £800-£1,000.

Next up, the jewellery and watch section is being offered, again a larger section than previous recent sales. How about this Patek Phillipe keyless open-faced 18ct gold pocket watch? (FS53/457). As always with Patek Phillipe, the quality is outstanding and this pocket watch is no exception. Stamped 18k, 502747 and the inner cuvee engraved No 803516, Patek Phillipe et Cie, Geneve, Fabrique Pour, this beautiful watch has a pre-sale estimate of £1,800-£2,000. A late 19th Century Renaissance Revival ruby, pearl and enamel pendant by Carlo Giuliano (FS53/721) dating from circa 1875 is also expected to attract interest. Stamped CG for Carlo Giuliano and with a chain measuring 76cm long, it carries an estimate of £3,000-£5,000.

Day Two commences with the Oriental & European Ceramics and Glass Section of the sale (10:00am) and with over two hundred lots on offer, there is sure to be something that will catch your eye... such as this pair of Chinese underglaze blue and copper-red Rouleau vases (FS53/793), with panels painted with lake and landscape scenes with Buddhist lions, insects, birds and a fisherman. Kangxi and measuring 43cm, the auction estimate is £2,000-£4,000 or this rare pair of small Bow blue and white triple-shell sweetmeat dishes (FS53/942). With a provenance of Roderick Jellicoe, London, this super pair of dishes are inviting bids of £800-£1,200.

Pictures and prints follow and although a perhaps slightly smaller section than usual, there are some wonderful gems, including Henry King Taylor (1799-1896) Shipping off Mont Orgueil, Jersey (FS53/1027), which is expected to fetch £3,000-£5,000 and Andrew Law (1873-1967) Cock and Hen (FS53/1076) a sweet oil on canvas, with an estimate of £1,000-£1,500.

Day Three sees the Works of Art play centre stage (10:00am), where a Damascus ware brass and silver inlay bowl (FS53/1236) of squat circular form is being offered with an estimate of £1,000-£1,200 and a pair of late 19th Century ormolu and porcelain mounted twin light candelabra (FS53/1311) with twin scrolling branches and porcelain figures of a gallant and his lady invite bids of £1,000-£1,500.

The final offering within this quarterly fine art auction is the furniture, where there is a diverse range of lots, including this French walnut refectory table (FS53/1400) dating from the 18th Century. With an extraordinary patina and measuring 220cm long, 81cm wide, this stunning table has a pre-sale estimate of £3,000-£5,000. There is also a wonderful private collection of nineteen lots of furniture by the world renowned Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson (Kilburn), each piece with the hallmark small carved mouse, including this Robert 'Mouseman' Thomspon (Kilburn) English oak 6ft open bookcase (FS53/1606), which carries a pre-sale estimate of £1,500-£2,500. This collection also includes trays, other bookcases, standard lamps, stools, newspaper rack, to name a few... A rare sight to see so many pieces from one collection.
