Sale Notes

The sale on Wednesday, 7th December 2016 includes a private collection of miniature porcelain tea-sets by many of the most important English factories including Worcester and Derby. The collection also includes miniature porcelain and pottery dogs. Another collection included in the second day is one of ‘Cane Wares’. Cane ware is a pale brown pottery used to imitate pastry and as a result was used to make realistic pie dishes and covers and can also be called pastry ware. Invented in the later 1700s by Josiah Wedgwood, it was something of a gimmick that never really took off.

However, in the early 19th century when the threat from Napoleon was strong, there was a national shortage of flour and suddenly dishes became very popular especially in inns, clubs, universities and mess rooms.

Within the Works of Art section, there are the usual spread of interesting items from around the world including a pair of Chinese cloisonné vases decorated all over with chrysanthemums together with a pair of French spelter figures celebrating music.

The collectors’ section includes teddy bears, dolls, trains die casts and many other interesting items.

Edged weapons and medals for the final area of collecting with World War I iron crosses, various swords and daggers on offer.
