Sale Notes

This is a new, rare and exciting opportunity to buy work by Robert Lenkiewicz and we are delighted to support The Lenkiewicz Foundation by offering a carefully selected group of paintings, watercolours, drawings, prints and artefacts with the Foundation's proceeds going towards securing permanent exhibition premises on the Barbican in Plymouth.

The sale includes major paintings new to the market and leading these is The Painter with Mary in Newspaper Magi-Fool's Hats (also known as ‘Paper Crowns’), which is estimated at £30,000-£50,000. This is the statement painting and the culmination of the painter's 1981 Project titled The Painter with Mary: A Study in Obsessional Behaviour. It is a painting well known to devotees of Lenkiewicz and will undoubtedly become the centrepiece of any collection.

The large 1965 canvas called Mouse with Wool is also one of the artist's major early works, which took over six years to finish and the artist referred to as a 'turning point'. It is estimated at £20,000-£30,000.

Of similar iconic status is Diogenes and Belle at Prayer with Chairs, which was painted in 1974. This meticulously composed and executed work is the culmination of the Death and The Maiden Project, which explored the passing of time and the relationship between love and death. It is estimated at £20,000-£30,000.

All these significant works have been included in the recent museum exhibitions of the artist's work in this country and in Germany last year.

There is also a fine self-portrait inscribed Private Studio, Priory Road, Lower Compton, with an estimate of £20,000-£30,000. But not all lots in the sale are estimated in £1,000s and there are drawings, watercolours, prints, posters, photographs and palettes from the Barbican studio with estimates below £1,000. For example, the silk screen print titled The Dance which is estimated at £300-£500, and there are plenty with estimates below £200 like the Evening with Lenkiewicz Exhibition poster estimated at £50-£100.

The sale is open for public viewing from 9:00am-5:00pm on Thursday, 26th March 2015 and Friday, 27th March 2015 and there will be talks about Lenkiewicz, which are open to the public, at 12 noon on both viewing days.
