Sale Notes

This sale has a number of silver items that would have been carried by smartly dressed gentleman of the late 19th/early 20th century. In fact, the number of silver pieces carried almost every day would not only have weighed them down but made them an attractive proposition to any would be blaggard. Silver watch chains were de rigueur when wearing a waistcoat and were often further enhanced by a silver vesta.

The Edwardians were prolific smokers, predominantly smoking cigars up until the outbreak of the First World War, so silver vesta cases and silver cigarette cases would have been carried by many. Also carried by many were small silver snuff boxes. Silver snuff boxes and silver cigarette cases were often plain and practical in both design and decoration. However, more elaborate silver and enamelled cigarette and silver vesta cases can be found and these often command higher prices at auction.

While gentleman carried silver vestas and silver cigarette cases, the ladies also carried a similar number of silver items. Two of the more common place silver pieces carried were silver calling card cases and silver vinaigrettes. Silver card cases were often decorated with topical scenes while the small silver vinaigrettes were chased with scrolls and flowers for the feminine taste.
