Sale Notes

Whilst the next Fine Sale at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood is not until 27th and 28th January 2015, it does have the premium of being digitally on view for over a month, owing to the Christmas break. As such, whilst reviewing the sale, I will try hard not to mention seasonal puns such as the large Turkey carpet (FS25/751) that is on offer.

Instead, I shall extoll the virtues of the menagerie of beasts on offer that range from the everyday like the Dutch silver cow creamer (FS25/102) through the dove that appears on a gold and pietra dura brooch (FS25/224) to the watchful hare (FS25/436) painted with every attention to detail by Lucy Leavers. But if you prefer your beasts a little more fantastical then perhaps you might like the Magdeburg style elephant and castle bestiary candlestick (FS25/653) or the grotesque Torquay pottery vases (FS25/526), whose grimacing visages look like they would harm any flowers foolishly placed within them.

However, a beast that is altogether more reflective is depicted in a bronze by Rheingold (FS25/688), which shows a monkey sat atop a pile of Darwin volumes pondering a human skull with a pair of callipers held in one foot. If that seems altogether too philosophical for you then why not a pretty picture of some flowers (FS25/403) by Mary Fedden, a pot of crocuses and pansies shouldn't be too challenging.
