Lot Description

Gaydon, Barnstaple, a Victorian shop regulator the eight-day duration timepiece movement with a dead-beat escapement, maintaining power, adjustable pallets, a wood rod pendulum with large brass bob and a brass bound weight, the twelve-inch round silvered dial with typical regulator layout, with outer minutes and two subsidiary dials for seconds and hours and engraved with the name 'Gaydon, Barnstaple', the mahogany case with a glazed front door, canted corners, an inset panel to the base and a pediment top, height: 204 cm.

Notes

This regulator was removed from the shop premises of Garland & Winkles at 99, High Street, Barnstaple on it's closure some twenty years ago. They were successors to Gaydon and it is believed that this was the shop regulator used by John Gaydon during his time as a clock and watchmaker. An almost identical shop regulator, but with a curved moulding above the dial, was sold by Hampton & Littlewood Auctioneers in January 2007, signed on the dial 'Gregory, Exeter' with the case almost certainly from the same cabinet maker.
