Sale Notes

If the pre-sale estimates are an accurate reflection then the forthcoming Fine Sale looks to be an exceptionally healthy one. Whether your taste in art and antiques is biased towards the ancient or the modern, there is something for everyone.

In the former group is a crisply carved Chinese pale celadon group of Guanyin and a child resting on a lion (FS18/698); or a little closer to home there is a documentary North Devon pottery harvest jug from Bideford (FS18/507) that is decorated with sailing vessels, fish, mariners compass, sun, moon and stars - everything a collector would want, including a date and personal attribution.

Just in case you were unsure of where China was in relation to the terrestrial and celestial fabric, you could consult the pair of Dudley Adams table globes (FS18/756) which, whilst estimated at £7,000-£10,000 are, perhaps, over shadowed by a grand pair of George III mahogany pedestal urns (FS18/816) that seem to be more than closely related to a pair in Paxton House, Berwickshire that were associated with Thomas Chippendale.

For those with a more modern eye, the pictures department has a strong group of St Ives paintings and sculpture, which includes two works by Paul Feiler, one entitled Cornish Harbour (FS18/400) and the other Portheras Blue (FS18/401). There are also two stunning diamond rings that complete the jewellery section (FS18/293) and (FS18/294) that prove that they really are a girl’s best friend.
