Sale Notes

The Three Day Winter Fine Art Sale has a good and varied offering of 801 lots, but has the largest volume of ceramics for many years.

Starting on the 29th January 2013, there is the collection of the late Donald Tryhorn (The Tryhorn Collection), which comprises mostly of 18th century European porcelain, heavily weighted towards Bow, Bristol, Plymouth, Chantilly and St Cloud. The Bow bottle vase (Lot 8) with Kakiemon decoration that has a good provenance (estimated between £1,000 and £2,000) and a delightful St Cloud trembleuse cup and saucer (Lot 133) are, perhaps, the potential highlights from the collection.

On the 31st January 2013, there is the usual mixed group of glass, a broad selection of Oriental porcelain of which a statuesque pair of Canton vases is estimated at between £3,000 and £5,000.

There is also a range of good domestic pottery and porcelain, which includes two large Royal Worcester porcelain vases painted with Highland Cattle by John Stinton.

Amongst the antique jewellery, there is an early 18th century mourning ring (Lot 347) decorated with blue enamel and diamonds on gold (estimated at between £1,800 and £2,200) and also an attractive diamond, ruby and gold floral spray brooch (Lot 350), estimated at £6,000-£8,000.

Maintaining an Oriental presence in the Works of Art department, there is a Chinese cloissone 'dragon' ewer  (Lot 679) with an estimate of £1,000-£2,000.

The picture section is also lengthy with both the ancient and modern catered for Attributed to Roelof van Vries (c 1631-1681), A Wooded Landscape (Lot 462) is being offered with an estimate of £6,000-£8,000 and Robert O Lenkiewicz (1941-2002) a striking image of 'The Bishop'  (Lot 484) from the Vagrancy Series, but the sale finishes with a flourish in the Furniture section with some striking pieces namely a Regency rosewood and brass inlaid breakfast table (lot 832) (estimate £6,000-£8,000) and a pair of Colonial carved padouk wood display cabinets in the Chinese taste (estimate: £2,500-£3,500) (Lot 864).
