Sale Notes

If the thought of August coming to an end and the days getting shorter are making you glum, then perhaps Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood’s next Antiques & Interiors Auction of the 30th August 2017 may have something to cheer you up.

Included in the sale is a wide range of ceramics, furniture, pictures, and collectables that surely has something for everyone. For example, if you have been missing your favourite baking show then why not get ahead of the trend for period kitchenalia with the tinplate measure, the flour shifter and the tinplate spice box,(EX191/259) Estimate £20-£40.

Maybe the small ivory gavel (EX191/230) (Estimate £80-£120) would be useful for any after dinner speaking that required a touch of gravitas, or perhaps you fancy being an auctioneer yourself?

The character of Mr Punch was so popular in the 19th century that in 1840 a German cigar manufacture created the brand of cigars we still know today, and a year later the satirical magazine was launched. The small silver pin tray (EX191/124) follows in the popularity of the period and could quite easily be used for any dongles, USBs or sim cards lying around the house rather than the pins it was originally made for.

If you are looking for something small and decorative then the pair of Chinese soft paste 'Hundred Boy's' snuff bottles (EX191/82) (estimate £80-£120) would suit a modest modern interior, or if you preferred European porcelain to Chinese, then the pair of Meissen cabinet cups and saucers (EX191/81) would perhaps be more suited at a similar estimate.

If you are into your 'retro' or 'vintage' look then auctions are ideal for you. Why buy a brand new reproduction tinplate toy for that touch of nostalgia, when an original toy like the Schuco violinist (EX191/229) could be bought at auction? There are many online retail sites that offer 'period', 'vintage' or 'retro' items that are probably no older then you or I, so when an auctioneer informs you that an Edwardian Art Nouveau mantel cloak is period you can be sure that it is.
