Sale Notes

If you have never been to an auction before then it is certainly about time to consider attending Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood's forthcoming Auction of Antiques & Interiors including Silver and Jewellery on the 21st February 2017.

Many people regularly watch the plethora of television programmes about antiques but surprisingly few have the courage to walk through the doors of a saleroom, missing out on an eye opening experience. Where else would you be able to see on offer over 200 lots of jewellery from a scarab beetle pendant on a 14k gold chain (EX178/100), estimated at £700-£900, to a Victorian Scottish hardstone mounted Celtic cross pendant ( EX178/114), estimated at £100-£200.

Not only will you be able to view these pieces up close, but specialist valuers and auctioneers will also be on hand to provide free advice. Now you don't get that from the telly!

Attending the sale you will be able to see just how diverse and interesting the range of periods and styles on offer at auction are, from the Victorian classical revival of the blue Jasperware cheese dish and cover (EX178/558), estimated at £60-£80, to the Art Deco silver dish(EX178/242), estimate at £80-£100.

Whilst the more traditional Jasperware piece might not suit modern taste, surely the simple elegant design of the WMF Art Deco glass vase and holder (EX178/732), estimated at £50-£80 would sit quite easily in a contemporary modern home.

The sale also shows the worldwide range of pieces on offer within the sale. The distinctive green glaze design of a pottery vase in the auction is recognisable to many as Branham Pottery from North Devon (EX178/496), estimate £50-£70, whereas the more unusual 'fish skin' ground of the small vase with gilt decoration is more obviously Japanese in origin (EX178/490).

So whatever your style, be it Neo-Classical like the pair of silver desk candlesticks to the more contemporary, the fortnightly auctions of furniture, ceramics, pictures and works of art will provide an more enhancing first-hand experience of antiques than watching the television ever could.
