Sale Notes

Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood Antiquarian Book Auction on the 1st October 2014 has something for people of many varied interests.

Lovers of music may care to purchase an extensive library on the works of Gilbert and Sullivan (BK12/22) without having to trouble themselves with building a collection themselves. Slightly more highbrow is a proof copy of Elgar's The Apostles (BK12/18), which is not only annotated, but signed by the great man.

There are other famous autographs and important inscriptions to be found, such as that of Burne-Jones, Thackeray, David Livingstone and Alma Tadema, which are all in one album (BK12/505). Many famous people whose autographs are requested often or who have to write many letters have chosen to use facsimile signatures to ease the process. Winston Churchill was a prime example who had no choice due to the enormous correspondence he received from the general public. Thus his signature, when certainly genuine, is highly-prized. A small group of his own works, signed and inscribed by him, including a copy of the life of his father (BK12/130) is included here and this work is expected to fetch £2,000-£3,000.

English literature is well-represented here, including a group of Thackeray and Trollope first editions, as well as a beautifully-bound copy of one of Dickens' best-loved works Oliver Twist (BK12/146).

There are many books on local history including one particular single-owner collection, which includes many of the classic works you would expect to find such as Pole (BK12/396), Lysons (BK12/374), Polwhele (BK12/397), Risdon (BK12/408) and Prince (BK12/400). In addition to this is an extensive collection of more modern volumes on local history, which should have wide appeal to the Devon public. A great classic in this field is Pulman's Book of the Axe (BK12/402) which gives such a complete description and analysis of this Devon river.

Further than this, the sale has several fine bindings, an interesting group of 'Art' books, and all the usual subject areas are covered.
