Brian Goodison-Blanks previews the upcoming Sporting and Collectors Sale, which will be held in Honiton in Devon. The sale has some fine antique firearms, weapons and armour as well as many toys, dolls and teddybears. Live online bidding will be available for this auction.

The forthcoming Sporting and Collectors Sale at our Honiton Salerooms in Dowell Street on 18th September 2013 has a wide range of lots for all collectors and enthusiasts.

The sale has selections of antique firearms, weapons and armour as well as toys, dolls and collectables, plus a single owner collection of antique and later nutcrackers.

The range and diversity of nutcrackers within this particular collection will certainly be an eye opening experience for many. There are early 18th century brass lever type nutcrackers for hazelnuts and treen screw type nutcrackers as well as the wonderfully carved 19th century Black Forest nutcrackers that are so popular with collectors. Ranging from £30-£40 through to £200-£300 in value, there is plenty to help existing collectors complete their own collections or assist aspiring collectors to start from scratch.

International interest is expected for this early 18th century North European crossbow that carries a pre-sale
estimate of between £1,500 and £2,000 within the antique arms and armour auction of the sale.

International interest is expected for this early 18th century North European crossbow that carries a pre-sale estimate of between £1,500 and £2,000 within the antique arms and armour auction of the sale.

The antique arms and armour auction within the sale includes many swords and edged weapons form all periods. Among the highlights in the section is an early 18th century North European crossbow. In good original condition, this crossbow will no doubt bring a great deal of interest from international collectors via the online bidding available during the sale, as well as strong competition from buyers in the room, attracted by the £1,500-£2,000 estimate.

Recent successful sales of antique firearms should continue with pre-sale interest already high for an excellent example of a Colt Navy 1851 six shot percussion revolver. In its original box with cap tin, nipple tool and powder flask, the gun retains some of its original blueing and has all matching serial numbers. All of these features combine to make this a desirable piece and should perform well above its pre-sale estimate of between £2,000 and £3,000.

A French bisque doll (Limoges) is one of several within the antique dolls auction of the sale.

There has always been a strong market for toys and dolls, primarily due to the nostalgia factor of many collectors. It is easy to see "why" when cataloguing a sale, as many early memories flood back on seeing toys from your own childhood.

A Dinky articulated Bedford lorry and a Coles crane are amongst the lots in the diecast models auction in the upcoming Sporting & Collectors Sale.

There are a number of boxed and unboxed diecast vehicles by Dinky, Corgi and Matchbox as well as dolls by Armand Marseille, Heubach and Limoges. Toy trains are still extremely popular and collectors are well catered for with a good selection of Hornby OO/HO gauge and O gauge pieces in the sale.

An Edwardian Royal Navy blue and white mess plate is one of the lots in the Maritime section being included in the sale in response to the growing popularity of our specialist Maritime Auctions.

Due to the popularity of our Maritime Auctions, we have included a Maritime section within the Sporting & Collectors Sale on 18th September 2013. Among the ships fixtures and fittings, sextants and ship models is an Edwardian Royal Navy blue and white mess plate, similar to those used by cadets at Dartmouth Naval College at the turn of the century. The estimate of £80-£120 may mean it will find itself one again in Dartmouth with a local collector.

As the largest Westcountry Auctioneers, we have established links with traditional field sports and continue to provide a good selection of hunting and shooting pictures, sporting guns and equestrian related articles for collectors within the sale.

The sale includes a Jack Russel decorated intaglio bar brooch with a pre-sale estimate of £200-£300.

Perhaps one of my favourite pieces is the small intaglio reverse painted Jack Russell decorated bar brooch illustrated above. Although only 3cm long, it should attract buyers to push the bidding above the £200-£300 pre-sale estimate.
