Lots in the June 2010 Maritime Sale
Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood are holding a major auction of maritime and nautical
related items at the
Okehampton Street Saleroom in Exeter
on 16th June 2010.
Among the many items to be included in the forthcoming Specialist Maritime sale
is an historically important late 18th century Turkish bronze cannon captured during
the Dardanelles Operation in 1807.
Fearful of the Turkish joining the French during the Napoleonic war, the English
Fleet was sent under the command of Admiral Sir John Thomas Duckworth to provoke
the Turkish fleet out of Constantinople into a forced engagement, during which the
cannon was captured from the Turks.
Admiral Sir John Thomas Duckworth married Susannah Buller, the daughter of the Bishop
of Exeter in 1808 and resided at Weare House, Topsham, now know as Exeter Golf and
Country club. As a piece of both local and naval history it is anticipated to attract
a great deal of attention in the sale.
Also included in the sale are a number of Maritime pictures such as "Bending The
Mainsail" by Arthur Briscoe (1873-1947), as well as a range of nautical ceramics,
silver instruments and collectables.
