Having re-introduced the Specialist Maritime Sale after a 15 year absence
from the region, Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood's Maritime sales have continued to
grow from strength to strength. As the only auctioneers in the South West to provide
a department dedicated to this field, it draws considerable national and international
interest.
Amongst nautical themed ceramics, silver and pictures, the sale contains traditional
crafted scrimshaw and sailor's valentines, such as a uniquely decorated example
that sold for £7,000 in 2006.
Exceptional pieces such as the fine early 19th Century model of HMS Mars which sold
for £68,500 and the splendid pair of bronze "Coote Cannon" that fetched £20,000
has given the department a high reputation for both sale entries and hammer prices.
With pieces ranging from the early days of navigation such as an 18th century backstaff,
to those from historically significant ships of the 20th century, the popularity
of the sale continues to swell, so that from 2009, the specialist Maritime sale
will be held twice a year.
As West Country Auctioneers, the
Sporting Sale very much reflects the history and tradition of the region. Field
sports are a major part of many peoples lives today, as they have been for centuries.
The sale has a following of collectors interested in riding, shooting and fishing
equipment, pictures, books and curiosities, even those interested in early golfing
items that are willing to bid £1,050 for a silver and enamel vetsa.
In both cases Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood has identified a growing market outside
of the traditional repertoire of Auction houses and developed these specialist themed
sales to the success enjoyed today.
