Waltham Watch Company

Information about the Waltham Watch Company

The Waltham Watch Company evolved from a business venture (known as the Warren Manufacturing Company) between David Davis, Edward Howard and Aaron Lufkin Dennison in the 1850s. This initial partnership became known as the Boston Watch Company, but had gone bankrupt by May 1857. It was succeeded by Appleton Tracey & Co, which was established from the ashes of the Boston Watch Company and was based in Waltham in Massachusetts.

Appleton Tracey & Co merged with the Waltham Improvement Co in January 1859 to become the American Watch Co. The company changed its name in 1885 to become the American Waltham Watch Co in 1885 and subsequently the Waltham Watch Co in 1907. It changed its names in 1923 to the Waltham Watch and Clock Company and finally in 1925 to the Waltham Watch Company before being declared bankrupt in 1949.

Aaron Dennison, who was a founding member of the original company, left the firm in 1861. After a number of other ventures in the watch-making business, Dennison moved to England, where he settled in Handsworth, Birmingham to set-up his case-making business. The business produced cases for many imported watches, including those of Waltham. Dennison died in 1895 but his new business continued to thrive well into the twentieth century.
