Robert Alexander (Senior) is recorded as both a clockmaker and watchmaker at Tolbooth Wynd and Shore in Leith, Mid Lothian from 1751 until circa 1825.

Alexander married Margaret Ferguson and had various children, including Robert Alexander (Junior) (1741-1830), born 5th June 1741.

Robert Alexander, Leith, a mahogany longcase clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch arched brass dial engraved with black Roman numerals, floral corner spandrels, having a raised boss to the arch engraved 'Tempus Fugit' with engraved winged serpents to either side, the dial centre with subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and maker's signature 'Robert Alexander, Leith', with decorative brass hands, the mahogany case with a break-arch trunk door, curved moulding to the hood with a fan finial to the centre and three-quarter turned columns, with a plain base, standing on bracket feet, height: 206 cm.
