Patricia Algar (1939-2013)

Biography of artist Patricia Algar (1939-2013)

Patricia Algar (1939-2013) was born in London in 1939. She studied at Wimbledon School of Art and the Royal Academy in the 1960s.

Algar was regarded as one of the most promising students of her generation. She married and moved to West Cornwall in 1964 where she lived and worked for the rest of her life. Her married name was Patricia May Carr, which reverted to Algar when she divorced in the 1970s. Algar moved to St Ives after an initial period in Nancledra and spent her last 20 years or so in Marazion.

Algar painted continually throughout this time and her work is represented in numerous private collections throughout the United Kingdom as well as the public collections at Penlee House and Museum in Penzance and the Falmouth Art Gallery.

Algar also spent short periods working in America in the late 1980s, where she exhibited and sold to private collectors.

Patricia Algar admired and was influenced by Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard and Sickert among others and had an interest in an eclectic and wide range of Classical and Renaissance art.

When Algar died in 2013, there were some 300 works in her studio, including well over 200 paintings, together with numerous drawings, sketchbooks and prints covering the entire range of her career from student days to the months before her death.
