Hornby

Information about Model Railway Company Hornby

Frank Hornby started his 'Meccano' business in 1907 and by 1915 he produced his first clockwork train. Hornby was in direct competition with German and French manufacturers such as Bing, Carette, and Marklin. Hornby trains were not as highly engineered as Bassett-Lowke and, therefore, were a more affordable price.

O gauge was the main standard of the day up until the 1930s when Frank Hornby decided to go for a smaller table top gauge (OO/HO). The result was Hornby Dublo, which was introduced in 1938. Hornby Dublo was, like the larger gauge, first produced in clockwork, but then later driven by electricity.

Both gauges came in boxed sets as well as individual items. Slowly the O gauge waned in popularity and the OO/HO gauge grew in ever increasing numbers. Metal trains turn to plastic trains as Hornby entered the 1960s. After numerous twists and turns, Hornby are still producing train sets to this day.
