Information about the submarine HMS Sportsman (1942)

HMS Sportsman (1942) was the third of the S-Class submarines ordered by the Royal Navy. The order for Sportsman was placed on 14th October 1940 and she was laid down on 1st July 1941 at Chatham Dockyard. She was launched on 17th April 1942, being commissioned into the Royal Navy on 21st December 1942.

HMS Sportsman spent much of her World War II service patrolling the Mediterranean.

She was lent to the French Navy on 8th July 1952 during which time she was renamed La Sibylle. She sunk off Toulon on 24th September 1952 during a military exercise and sea manoeuvres.
