Information about French jewellers Cartier

Cartier was founded in Paris in France in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier. His jewellery and watches are well known for their exquisite and unique style with a long history of sales to royalty and also celebrities. It is still popular today with more than 200 stores in 125 countries.

It is difficult to identify early Cartier items as they are not usually marked, although some that are marked from this time will be stamped with Cartier's first stamp, which depicts an ace of hearts. Those early pieces that are marked tend to be impressive pieces that were exhibited at world fairs.

The firm of Cartier had achieved its reputation as King of Jewellery by 1902 after just two generations of being in business.

Cartier is well-known for their wrist watch models including Santos and Tank. Santos, the first Cartier wristwatch, was released in 1904 and was followed by jewellery watches in 1906.

Most contemporary Cartier watches and jewellery are based upon the distinctive designs of the company's founder Louis-Francois Cartier. The mix of platinum, quartz and rectangular diamonds became the significant symbol of the "White Era".

Cartier's "Love" bracelet series, symbolizing faithful love and belief. For decades, the enchantment of the "Love" bracelet brought people into ecstasy of it's inventive creativity. Beginning with it's oval design, "Love" was like a "shackle", represented specificity and deep love of each other. Many stars, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren, wore "Love" bracelets.
