Bassett-Lowke & Co

Information about Model Engineering Company Bassett-Lowke & Co

Wenman Basset-Lowke founded his firm in 1899 in Northampton under the name Bassett-Lowke & Co. In 1901, Bassett-Lowke produced its first catalogue of trains and worked with continental firms such as Bing and Carette. This lasted until the First World War when the factory was turned to war production.

Post war, Bassett-Lowke returned to toy and industrial model engineering, not only producing locomotives, but boats, architects models, armoured fighting vehicles and traction engines. Bassett-Lowke had shops in High Holborn, London, Edinburgh and Manchester.

Bassett-Lowke was renowned for high quality and highly-engineered models. This is reflected in the prices achieved at auction. The shops were shut during the 1960s and train production ceased in the 1970s but their industrial models carried on and are admired all over the world.
