A 19th Century Indo Colonial Hardwood and Ivory Inlaid Rectangular Kneehole Desk from the Collection

A 19th Century Indo Colonial Hardwood and Ivory Inlaid Rectangular Kneehole Desk from the Collection

This unusual private collection comprises more than a dozen lots of campaign furniture from the 19th Century.

Campaign furniture can be described as any furniture made to break down to make it easier to travel with. In the 19th Century, demand for this type of furniture increased and designs were sometimes way ahead of their time.

The most common type of campaign furniture is the good old chest of drawers, referred to as a military chest and made to be broken down into two pieces. Sometimes, they are so cleverly made it is difficult to see how they can actually be dismantled.

The collection has a couple of good examples of these campaign chests, one of which was made in the 19th Century of mahogany and is brass bound.

The collection also has a good example of a brass bound writing desk made for campaign use in  the 19th Century from rosewood.
