20th Century and Contemporary art and design is now a firm fixture in our auction calendar, and on Tuesday, 25th May 2021 an eye-catching variety of lots go on offer at the salerooms in Exeter. The sale includes Modern and Contemporary artworks across a range of disciplines from bespoke jewellery to designer furniture and modern pictures, sculpture, ceramics, glass and iconic design.

A strong picture section includes a John Bellany (1942-2013) oil titled Woman with Lamb (CC05/167) depicting the artist in the form of a lamb receiving comfort from a woman with a fish on her head! - the fish being symbolic of trade and Scotland's fishing heritage. The painting is estimated at £3,000-£5,000. Among other important British artists represented are two large interiors. One, that includes a self-portrait by John Bratby (CC05/161) and one an intriguing Boudoir Interior by Fred Yates (CC05/158). Each of these has an estimate of £4,000-£6,000. The sale also offers two large paintings by Alan Cotton, the Irish Coast at Co Kerry (CC05/147), estimated at £2,000-£3,000 and Morocco - Deepening Shadows in the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass (CC05/148), estimated at £1,500-£2,500.

Among the 20th Century and Contemporary Jewellery section are a number of pieces from the workshops of Danish silversmith Georg Jensen. These include a rectangular dolphin brooch (CC05/171) designed by Arno Malinowski and estimated at £150-£250.

The ceramic and studio pottery includes work by John Maltby, who trained with David Leach at Bovey Tracey before establishing his own workshop in 1964. Talking about his own work, Maltby said "... it is imbued with a cautious love of life", and the energetic stoneware sculpture (CC05/247) and the large stoneware dish (CC05/071) offered in the sale have estimates of £400-£600 and £800-£1,200 respectively.
